Terazzo flooring is an amalgam flooring, which has a long history in Western Civilization.

Roman floors were made of stone and clay amalgams, but a new effect was discovered in the 15th Century, when irregular marble pieces and marble shavings were added to wet clay.

Today, Portland cement has replaced clay, and some manufacturers are substituting glass for marble.
