| We're about to install a mix of ceramic tiles (1/2 inch thick) and randomly placed Interstyle Jasper glass tiles (1/8 inch thick) onto painted drywall for a kitchen backsplash. The tile contractor tells me anti-fracture membrane isn't really needed for the glass tiles (our glass tiles will range from 3x3s to 6x6s and will be separated from each other by the ceramic tiles). Do you agree? Also, he tells me that sanded grout, if applied carefully, probably won't scratch the tiles. Thoughts on that as well? |

Hello Heather,
Jaspers is a line of etched fused glass tiles by Interstyle, and their brochures call for an anti fracture membrane. The installer should get with the program - an anti fracture membrane will add a small fraction to the cost of your purchase & installation, will give greater job assurance and the added advantage of a moisture barrier.
From Interstyle's web site: | Quote: | | If a crack suppression membrane is not used neither the manufacturer nor the dealer will accept any responsibility should any cracking occur. |
If your installer's unfamilar with the process there are instructions on the manufacturer's site that include setting materials as well. He can start at:

Hello Heather,
I just reread your forum question. My answer was pretty categorical, so I'll add here that in practice, your installer could be right, but there's no guarantee.
If the proportion of glass tiles is small, the risk of cracking is probably very low on a few accent small format tiles. Even on 25mm x 25 mm toles though, the glass tile manufacturer wont guarantee the application, so if its a small area a membrane is probably a good precaution. He should have some solid or liquid membrane in stock that he can use - one of the advantages of using an installer and not having to buy all the materials yourself.
