I'm planning to make kitchen backsplash, making a simple mosaic pattern with small glass tile and ceramic tile.
We were planning to do it over plywood, but need to know if there are finishes needed on the board to stop water from getting absorbed there. Also I read that the ceramic and glass tile have different porousness, should we be concerned about this?

Hi Anna. Plywood really has no good use anywhere near glass tile. It expands & contracts too much. You would be much better off with cement board or even drywall (if you used a membrane).
Types of membranes include paint-on like Red Gaurd, and sheet membranes like Schluter Kerdi or Nobleseal CIS. All of these have the effect of an antifracture membrane that isolates your tile from movement or expansion/contraction in the subsurface.

Glass tile & ceramic tile can be mixed just fine (their porosity is not a problem), as long as you prepare the surface up to glass standards like above.

Anna, I'm just about to set out on my first tile project, using 3/4" Sicis transparent mosaic glass tiles, in a vertical brickset pattern of blocks of a few related colors, for a kitchen backsplash! And what a coincidence--our cabinets are the very kind that are on the home page of this site--the Ikea Hallarum -- our tiles will be *slightly* smaller than those, but I was advised to use hardibacker, not plywood, as Tom said.

When it comes to lining up blocks of tiny tiles, so that they are nice and square, does anyone have any suggestions? That's the part that's scaring me at present. How can I line these things up? They're face mounted on paper. How are you going to handle this, Anna? Or are you going free-form? What size tiles are you using?

I confess I have not moved very quickly on this project, so I'm not one for giving a lot of advice. Another weekend flies by!

I have a few sheets of glass tiles called Lopio which I plan to cut up into smaller strips, and also some diverse mosaics in bags and some left over buigger ceramic pieces that I'll use as is or just smash up and use.

The glass tiles are all 25 mm. square. I as you say plan to 'free form' but I probably shall use spacers for some of the ceramic tiles. Sorry I cant give more help. I am not sure about the need for lining up the glass tiles, I 'm starting to wonder about this though!
