Some people I know have ceramic tile with heating under it. What about glass floor tile? I saw some on the site here, and read a little about it elsewhere, but haven’t heard if it’s OK to be heated radiantly.
We live in a place where there's frequent power cuts. These only last for short periods, so I think it makes sense to pass hot or cooling water under the tile - as it holds the heat or cool for a while under there.
So, is glass tile good for radiant heating?

Gee, I am sorry, but we just don't know for sure. That is, generally we think it is OK, but we have not tested it.
From what I know about, floor heating systems are generally slow and gentle to heat and cool. Temperatures are not extreme and therefore thermal shock should not be an issue. If you install over an anti-fracture membrane, I believe you will minimize the potential of movement of the substrate to cause cracks to mirror into the surface. A good polymer-modified thinset will increase flexibility and adhesion; so I can't think of a good reason why you should not do it.

Hi Hans,
I've had good success with glass liners & decos over radiant floors. I agree with Kim that the thermal swings are not as fast as compared to what you would get around a fireplace or outdoors in the sun. I always use an antifracture membrane over radiant heat like Schluter Ditra or Nobleseal CIS. I really think this step is important & helps limit the effects of those temp swings. If you want to err on the side of caution, you can keep the individual tile sizes down smaller. Also make sure of course that the tiles are rated for floor use.

| We recently partnered up with SpeedHeat to test out our Carter and Ashland glass tile's for suitability in radiant heating applications. The results were a success! The tile warmed quickly without any adverse affect on the mesh backing. |
