| I am planning on purchasing irredescent glass tiles from Ann Sacks. They are called constellation. The instruction sheet does not specifically indicate an anti fracture substrate. Is Primer S a form of this? They come on a mesh backed 12 x 12 sheet. the tiles are 5/8 each |

Hi and welcome:
The Constellation tiles from Ann Sacks should not present any particular difficulties with installation.
I am a little perplexed that the installation instructions I found for the Constellation calls for Mapei's Adesilex P10, a product that as far as I can tell does not exist in North America (I am assuming you live somewhere in NA).
Continuing with this thought however, Primer S is specified to keep the adhesive from drying too quickly, and it will not provide any anti fracture properties for the job.
Unfortunately I have to provide alternative instructions from the instructions Ann Sacks has posted: I would purchase Granirapid white adhesive from Mapei and install the tiles over a good anti-fracture membrane. My preference is for the "peel and stick" variety such as available from Protecto Wrap or Mapei. Coincidentally, the anti-fracture membrane also calls for a sealer over any drywall surface. The reason for insisting on anti fracture is because we feel it is reasonable insurance against cracks and moisture penetration for a small additional fee.

Thanks for your reply. I live in Los Angeles, California. Are the products you mentioned available at places like Home depot? I do not remember seeing anything like these plastic sheets. (But that may be due to the fact I was not looking for them) Do you know if there is a websiste availble to view the Mapei products? Thanks so much.
I will print out your reply and give to my installer. I just want to make sure I understand the steps.
1. The existing tile will be removed, the wall will be smoothed out.
2. A sealer will be placed on the drywall - What type of sealer?
3. The anti fracture sheets will be placed on top of the sealer
4. The Granirapid adhesive will be used to stick the tiles on the wall
5. The tiles will be grouted with non-sanded grout
Is this correct? |

Marnae:
You have given us a bit of new information that needs to be considered:
You are renovating an area that is already tiled. There are two practical options here. Often removing old tile work is more work than it is worth and the resulting wall is so difficult to repair that it is just simpler to remove the entire wall substrate and start from scratch. This particularly true if the old installation was on drywall or other type of sheet substrate.
If the tiles are installed in a traditional "mud" base as is often the case in Los Angeles, then you might consider removing the old tiles. But a more practical option is to simply apply the anti-fracture membrane over the old tiles and apply new tile over that. You will have to assess the condition of the old tiles (are they loose or falling off?) how smooth the old installation is (any trim pieces that stick out?)and how you will deal with any exposed edges (the new tiles installed over the old will be considerably higher).
Mapei's US web site is as follows:
http://www.mapei.com/MapeiAmericas/en/products_line1.htm
USA.: 1-800-992-6273
Mapei's anti-fracture membrane can be found at:
http://www.mapei.com/MapeiAmericas/en/products_line1.htm
Protecto Wrap's web site can be found at:
http://www.protectowrap.com/cat_floor.php
(800) 759-9727
The sealer required for the anti fracture membrane is provided by the manufacturer of the membrane. It is only needed if the membrane is installed over a porous surface.
It best that you get information about purchasing these products in your area directly from the manufacturer. Both toll free numbers are attached.
