Frequently Asked Questions

Can glass tiles be installed in areas of high heat, for instance around a fireplace, or around a range?

As long as there is no direct exposure to a flame, and clearance requirements are met, glass tiles will not be adversely effected by areas of high heat. Note, however, that grouts may degrade when exposed to heats in excess of 100 degrees Celcius.

Should glass tiles be tempered?

No. If glass tile were temperered, it would resist cutting.

Can I use glass tiles outside?

Small format (2” by 2” or less) tiles are very well suited for outdoors. All glass tiles have a very high tolerance to freeze/ thaw conditions, as they are nonporous. They are also resistent to acid rain, ultra violet rays and chemicals.
Note that most large format tiles do not rate well for thermal shock resistence (ability to withstand extreme and sudden temperature changes). If the tile may be exposed to thermal shocks - for instance, icy water thrown against a wall that has been baking in the hot sun), large format glass tiles may not be suitable. Consult your manufacturer for details.

Can glass tiles be used on floors?

There are several glass floor tiles on the market today. The suitabity of a particular glass tile for use on floors depends on its properties - particularly its surface - and the traffic consitions. Consult the manufacturer's specifications.

Can glass be hazardous in any way as a floor or wall covering?

Glass will break and shatter if hit with extreme force. Neither glass nor ceramic tile should be installed where it will be subjected to hammering, for instance, as it can shatter or splinter.

How do I wash glass tile?

Use a soft cloth and mild detergent and water, or an uncoloured commerical window cleaning product, such as Windex.
